Going fishing and camping - Essential equipment and invaluable techniques

Below are some essential equipment you should include in your fishing and camping checklist, broken down into categories: Fishing equipment, Clothing and footwear, Cooking equipment, Foods and water, and Medical and hygiene. Also included below are some invaluable techniques to help you gain the ultimate fishing and camping experience.

Fishing equipment

Besides the basics such as rods, reels, lines, hooks, baits, lures, flies, tacklebox, sinkers, bobbers, depth finders, jig weights, spools, spoons, spinners, plugs, and cords, other essential fishing equipment you should add to your checklist are your charger, a map, a comfortable chair (a makeshift will do as long as it’s comfortable), your fishing license, a line cutter (finger nail clippers are adequate), and a versatile Coleman cooler such as the Coleman 50 quart wheeled Ultimate Xtreme marine cooler, the ideal ice cooler to bring along on your fishing trip. Other invaluable things to bring are extra springs for your spinning reel in the event that it breaks, as well as a screwdriver for changing the springs; downriggers for fishing down deep; clear nail polish for quick fixes to protect the paint on your spinner, spoon, or plug and to keep their paint from chipping; and fabric needles to work out line tangles and for sewing canvas tarp.

Clothing and footwear

You may have experienced a time when during a cold day and you were wearing your coat, you felt warm after walking or doing a physical activity; but when you removed your coat, you felt cold. This happens a lot when you are camping, hiking, or fishing. One of the best techniques for protecting yourself against changes in weather and temperature levels is the layering technique.

The layering technique has about three to four layers. The trick is to remove every layer when the temperature rises or your feeling warm, and to add a layer when you’re feeling cold or when the rain comes. Cotton is generally not recommendable because it soaks up sweat, making you feel uncomfortable at the end of the day, and possibly more likely to get you sick.

• First layer – For the first layer, lightweight synthetic material such as polyester spun or polypropylene shirt that wicks of sweat from the body, is best. Polypropylene is a lightweight material that will keep the sweat off your skin and make you feel comfortable for the rest of the day.

• Second layer – A long-sleeved polypropylene shirt will do well in keeping you cozy but remain cool during times when the weather is ambiguous.

• Third layer – The third layer is a sweater for keeping you warm in an unarguably cold weather. A good material is polyester fleece or wool. Fleece is lighter and more breathable than wool and is recommendable for relatively warmer weather and cold nights. Wool sweater is recommended for teeth-chattering cold weathers and climates because it traps in heat better.

• Fourth layer – The fourth layer is what is called a shell. Its main purpose is to protect you from the wind, rain, snow, and other harsh elements. For this, you want waterproof jackets, coats, or windbreakers with nylon or polyester fabrics. A popular trademark fabric is Gore-Tex, a breathable membrane that does not allow water to pass through but allows water vapors to pass through, making you all the more comfortable.

For fishing, you want to bring your boat shoes or tennis shoes and comfortable hiking boots. An invaluable accessory is sunglasses. There are sunglasses especially made for fishing. These sunglasses are polarized for enhanced vision: sharp, clear, and glare-free, the better to see below the water’s surface. A fishing cap is also a must to protect your face and neck from the harsh sun.

Cooking equipment

For cooking equipment, you want to bring lightweight and durable wares especially made for lugging around. So that you can be more organized, you can contain all your cooking wares in one box, particularly a box that serves a purpose for your food or cooking needs. An ingenious storage space is your camping cooler. You can put your grill, stove, silverware, coffee pot, eating utensils, plates, cups, serving spoons, tongs, paper towels, water jugs, soap, and thermos jugs inside a good-sized cooler and use it for keeping your beverage cold or storing the fish you catch. Because of its versatility and durability, you can also use it as a makeshift chair, bench, or table when preparing food or eating. Coleman coolers serve a lot of purpose in the whole process of camping and fishing.

Foods and water

Nuts, fruits, vegetable sticks, and granola bars are refreshing and convenient to bring with you during those long wait times in the fishing line, as well as for snacks and breaks during hiking and camping. They are also very healthy and will give you the boost and strength you need to go on. Don’t forget to bring the basic seasonings such as salt and pepper, and your preferred herbs and spices to make your fishing experience more delicious. Garlic, onions, potatoes, corn, and bread are also invaluable to make your meals more complete, tasty and interesting. For your food storage, you need an ice chest. You can use smaller camping coolers for your food and water since they come in various sizes and also have water dispensers.

Medical and hygiene

Always wear sunscreen! Protect your skin at all times, especially when you are fishing and are exposed to direct sunlight. Also bring a first aid kit with you including band-aids, bandages, antiseptics, antibiotics, painkillers, anti-allergies, cold packs, thermometer, and space blanket. For your hygiene, you might want to include toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, hair brush, and a toiletry bag (as a bare minimum).

You don’t want some petty annoyance ruin your momentum while you’re idyllically lying down in your boat taking in all the scenery and waiting for the fish to bite. Realizing you forgot something essential while you’re in your long-awaited fishing and camping trip can be deadly distracting and ruin the whole experience so make sure you complete that checklist before leaving.
