Mojo, A Music Cafe | Cochin
What you see — Mojo, a restaurant and music café, is run by DJ Sachin and is located in Palarivattom, Cochin. You are likely to miss this one if you don't keep your eyes open for the inconspicuous signboard that is tucked inside a lane. The entrance is done up in frosted glass, reminiscent of a pub, which we found quite intriguing. Inside, the restaurant is surprisingly small with just about 35 seats. The café has black walls and ceiling, a glass counter for quick eats and a tiny bar-like kitchen space. There are two LCD televisions on which music videos are played.
What you get — Mojo promises good food and great music videos all under one roof. So if you are looking for Continental, Mexican and Italian cuisine being served up with Michael Jackson or Led Zeppelin jamming on the LCD screen, this is the place!
The menu boasts of snacks, appetizers and salads, soups, sizzlers, pastas, burgers, sandwiches and the works. The sizzlers start at Rs. 200, the pastas at Rs. 160, burgers at Rs. 75 and sandwiches at Rs. 50. Quench your thirst with granitas, smoothies, shakes, cold coffees (with or without ice cream), sparkling sodas or even mocktails like the carrot and ginger energizer. However, if you want a cup of cappuccino or a mocha, you would be disappointed, because Mojo does not serve hot coffees!
DJ Sachin, the owner, who is a well-known figure in Cochin, mentioned that Mojo was inspired by Purple Haze in Bangalore. He has put his vast music video collection to good use at Mojo, and if you love English music, this joint is just the right place for you. Sachin organizes special video events too. When we visited, he was playing popular MJ videos. We were told that he would be more than happy to play guests' requests.
Our verdict — MetroMela visited Mojo at Cochin primarily because it's being touted as a music café. However, we were a tad disappointed by the interiors and the general lack of personality the restaurant-café exuded. DJ Sachin claimed that the interiors were up for a lot more work. However, we had expected a casual café-like seating but found it done up like a typical dine-in place. The service is okay and the drinks and snacks we tried were just fine. The restaurant-café hasn't come into its own yet and perhaps needs time to grow. Parking space is available for a couple of cars.
