Gov. Jan Brewer Signs Arizona Immigration Bill
The new Arizona immigration law is now in effect, as Governor Jan Brewer has just signed the Arizona immigration bill, Arizona Senate Bill 1070. The new law is hotly contested by numerous individuals, including the President of the United States. It is said that the the law mandates racial profiling be carried out by police authors and fosters legally sanctioned racism. The governor was also called upon by government officials of Mexico to not sign the bill, as they believe it is discriminatory. This isn't the first time that immigration legislature has taken on a single ethnic group, but Arizona still puts more quick cash into immigration law enforcement than many other states.
Arizona immigration bill signed by Gov. Jan Brewer
SB 1070 was signed into law by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer, which has made the controversial immigration bill into Arizona immigration law. Critics of Arizona Senate Bill 1070 included several Latino members of Congress, several officials of the Catholic Church, the American Civil Liberties Union, and the President of the United States. As Brewer signed into law perhaps one of the toughest immigration bills in living memory, however, any cash advance used in the campaign to get it vetoed has been in vain. She defended the bill, from the New York Times, as a "tool to solve a crisis we did not create and the federal government has refused to fix."
What does the immigration bill actually do?
Features of the bill are covered in a CNN post. Some features of the bill require any and all immigrants in the state of Arizona to - at all times - carry their identification papers on them. It will also give greater leeway for law enforcement officials. Police officers in Arizona will also be required to ask for identification and alien documentation on any individual suspected of being an illegal immigrant. There will also be greater sanctions in place for those who hire or knowingly transport illegal immigrants.
Is not the first, will not be the last
There have been harsh immigration bills that have gone through before. Arizona experiences more illegal immigration than many others. (Granted, the state used to be Mexican territory and before that, Native American territory.) In her place, Governor Jan Brewer believes she has done the right thing for her state, but the bill, according to critics, seems to provide far more leeway than what may be justifiable, and if used improperly, could open doors to tyranny. The outcome of the new Arizona immigration law remains to be seen, and there will likely be a constitutional or jurisdictional challenge.
