A basic POS system is NOT just a glorified cash register - it is designed as a tool to for your specific type of business whether it be quick-serve, fast casual or fine dining. Basically, a restaurant POS station consists of a computer with a touch-screen monitor, cash drawer and a receipt printer. Almost all restaurants have such electronic POS registers, with additional attached accessories depending on the needs of your restaurant.
For retail-style restaurants like sandwich shops, printers are often included with their POS systems in the food preparation area, to eliminate errors that can happen when scribble orders are passed back to the kitchen.
