My Truth Behind The Ban On Jewfish
I am not a politically-correct person and, to me, a jewfish is a jewfish is a jewfish. I just cannot seem to get that G word (grouper) to roll off my tongue. With great amusement I have been following the blogs on whether or not to have a season on these underwater Volkswagons. Let’s go back 40 years and with an open mind, by the time you finish reading this you just might agree with me and hopefully, make a decision based on the real deal.
It was a beautiful1969 spring day with perfect spearfishing conditions. The wind had been out of the Southeast for a few days and the visibility was 50' and the water fairly warm. No wetsuits – we just wore cut off blue jeans. We were diving in an area just off Hobe Sound and south of the Hole we called Red Bar. The reef ended on a sand bottom slew that rose up to Red Bar. It was a great spot to ambush fish coming off or going onto the sand from the reef.
After anchoring the boat, my brother and I dove into a sight I have never seen before or since. There were so many large jewfish congregated on the bottom that it looked like a herd of cattle. Talk about being pumped, it didn’t take long for my brother to put a shaft from his old two band Voit Swimaster Speargun into a 300-pounder. His 250lb test shock chord snapped like a piece of thread. I put a shaft into him with the same result. Our Voits were no match for fish of this size and power.
Fortunately, the big guy hid under a ledge. Three hits with our 12 gauge homemade bangstick and we still could not get him out from under that ledge. We finally had to haul him out with our boat by using a rope attached through his mouth and gills. It was all that 35 horsepower Johnson could do.
After pulling up to the fish house with our prized behemoth, some of the old commercial guys told us that we had caught them during a spawn. Back then, jewfish were everywhere in the rivers and reefs. We would even spear them around the jetty, the old Rands Pier and the deep cuts around the mangroves. One of our favorite spots was the Sun Parlor, now Sailfish Point, where we landed “Old Moe,” a 100-pounder.
I can remember being down at the fish house when some of the commercial guys would pull up with two or three 300-400lb fish on the back of their truck. All it took was a rope, a shark hook and a 10lb Jack fished around the channel of the Roosevelt and Ten Cent bridge to catch one. Some of the commercial divers would end up dragging many of these monstrosities behind their boats.
So, what is the truth behind the jewfish ban? Most will say it was because of over-fishing. I never saw that many jewfish being brought to the fish house and at a nickel a pound there were other species to target that brought more money. There just was not a demand for their tough, coarse and sinewy meat. The total commercial catch for the 1988 eastern Atlantic season was only 13,000lbs. We would catch twice that amount of mackerel or kingfish in just one trip. The economics of catching jewfish, at least in our area, just were not there.
What about habitat destruction? About the time I graduated from high school in 1971, Florida was just starting to experience a population boom, which has continued until today. Central Florida and both coasts experienced rapid growth with mass development and unfortunately habitat, natural lowlands and swamp destruction .The worst thing that could happen did. The Army Corp of Engineers, years before in their god-like decisions, straightened the Kissimmee river and destroyed the natural water shed of the Everglades to drain this new Florida. Lake Okeechobee turned into a giant toilet for Florida with the Army Corp of Engineers (a bureaucratic boondoggle, in my opinion) as the primary flusher. This has been the major cause of habitat destruction of our marine estuaries throughout the state. I do not have a PHD, BA, BS or any other college degree, but I am smart enough to know that fish are not stupid and will leave their place of residence when it is no longer habitable.
So what happened to the jewfish? It's simple: they went elsewhere to find a better home. Habitat destruction ran off the jewfish, but because some do-gooder saw a commercial guy or a spearfisherman with a large jewfish, he/she came to the conclusion that they were all being killed off. He/she assumed the reefs were being destroyed, and something had to be done. These were the same people with some political clout who ripped out mangroves and built seawalls, so they would have an unobstructed view of the water. Guess what’s next; you’re right – a ban to study the species. Some pencil pusher from the Midwest with a degree from MIT suddenly becomes an expert on jewfish and is then hired to implement this study and write rules and regulations.
Now we are getting down to the real truth behind the ban: MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. It always seems that when a species is put on a watch list, grant money pours in by the millions. Grant money for jewfish studies has been given to NASA to NOAA, and even a small company in California was given $20,000 to figure out how to vent the fish after it was on the surface. I could have done that for $200. Google it for yourself; it’s all on the Internet.
I have read with contempt that these groups doing the studies now want us to volunteer to help collect data. They have had 20 years and millions of dollars to study and collect data. They know that with our state on the verge of bankruptcy, their easy money will be drying up. Volunteers doing their work means more money will stay in their circle. The state of Florida does not own these resources; we the people do, and until we quit whining about it and do something, nothing will change.
I am all for opening up a limited season on jewfish. When I was a kid, there were very few deer and wild turkey in our state. Hunters and outdoor sportsmen brought back these populations like they have never been before. But it wasn’t the state who was affecting these populations. In many parts of the country, deer are so populated that they are destroying their habitat. If kept uncheck, Jewfish are capabable of doing the same, and in my opinion, they're the way to doing so. I know that there will be an outcry from do-gooders and enviro-nuts that the species will be wiped out, but that is one of their typical scare tactics. Let me answer that outcry. Studies show that jewfish are slow growers and live to be 50 maybe even 80 years old. If the species were almost wiped out 20 years ago, where did all these big jewfish we see today come from? They could not grow that big in 20 years. Like I said, they just went somewhere else.
Spearfishing is the most selective and environmentally friendly type of harvesting on the planet. We spearos are the ones to lead the effort to lobby for a limited season on jewfish. We have the knowledge, practicality and real-time ocean experience, and we’re a good group of young guns coming into maturity. With all of these resources, we can come up with guidelines for a limited season that would be fair, protect the resource and put money in the State coffers. Responsible spearfishing has always been a part of responsible conservation. Let’s get started!
