How To Use Your Microwave To Save Time
Preparing dinner is one of the most time consuming chores most people face. After a long day, the last thing you may want to do is face a hot oven. Sometimes, you may forget that your microwave can do a lot more than warm leftovers. It is easy to prepare a complete meal quickly and save clean up time as well.
Start with a clean countertop microwave. When items are heated uncovered in a microwave, they may splatter, leaving bits on the inside top and sides. The next time you cook something, these can be loosened by steam and end up in your cooking food. Take the time to wipe this crusted food away and to clean the turntable if needed. Spills can become baked on and can be difficult to clean.
Consider making your meat dish in the microwave. You can often prepare and serve in the same dish, which eliminates the need to clean a pan. One quick meal idea is to cook a meat loaf in a microwavable bundt cake pan. It will cook faster than in a loaf pan and will also be more decorative. The time required will depend on how thick your mixture is and the wattage of your microwave.
Cook canned or frozen vegetables in the same bowl you will use for serving. Several manufacturers make a very hard bowl out of plastic that is designed specifically for microwave use. Most also have lids, so after dinner you just cover leftovers and place in the refrigerator. All you have to do is pour the contents of the can into the bowl, add any desired seasonings, cover, and heat.
Baking potatoes is quick and easy in a microwave. Wash the potatoes well and use a knife or fork to make several small holes in them. Place them on a microwavable plate or cake pan and cook until soft. The time will vary, depending on the power of the microwave, the size of the potatoes, and how many you bake at once. Typically, two or three average sized potatoes will cook in around fifteen minutes.
You can save a dirty pan by making instant mashed potatoes in your microwave. Use a microwave safe bowl, preferably one that has a handle. Following the directions provided on the package, add water, milk, margarine, and any desired salt and pepper. Place in the microwave until the margarine is melted and the liquid is hot. Carefully transfer the bowl to a trivet and add the potatoes. Blend well by hand or use your hand mixer. Let the bowl cool down a bit, if necessary, and then place on the table.
Many foods can burst or splatter in the microwave, so cover anything you think might do so. Exercise extreme caution when removing items, using an oven mitt or pot holder. Keep your face and hands well clear of anything that has just been taken from a microwave. Some ingredients may continue to pop or splatter for a few seconds after the cooking stops.
