Choosing the right domestic cleaning solvent is a simple affair: the customer chooses one of many solvents that are capable of doing the job, and perhaps chooses a solvent that is environmentally friendly. Choosing the right industrial solvent, on the other hand, is not as easy. Because industrial grade grease and grime are tougher to remove, most companies don't have the option of choosing a "softer" solvent for sake of eco-friendliness. Yet, not choosing an eco-friendly solvent can impact more than the environment; it can also jeopardize a company's ability to carry out its cleaning operations and negatively impact its worker's long term health.
Prior to the green movement, companies could use dangerous solvents with relative impunity. But today, EPA regulations are increasingly limiting the use of toxic solvents in industrial and commercial settings, which means that companies can suddenly find that one or more of their critical solvents cannot be used in the necessary quantity, if at all. For companies that rely on a traditional parts cleaner or degreaser to perform speedy cleaning operations, the regulation or prohibition of a solvent can be frustrating, especially when adequate research on a replacement solvent hasn't been performed.
The regulation or prohibition of a critical solvent can compromise a company's finances, but so can using a traditional solvent that puts workers at risk for toxic exposure. More often than not, chronic illnesses that result from toxic exposure take years to develop. But when they do, a company can be hit with multiple lawsuits that shake its financial stability, as well as its public reputation. Some companies believe that proper ventilation is a defense against toxic chemical evaporation. But it's important to remember that, if you can smell toxic chemicals, the risk for toxic exposure is still there.
As bleak as the prospect of replacing toxic solvents with safer solvents may seem, the green movement has resulted in more than research and regulations that target toxic solvents; it has also spawned eco-friendly solvent companies that offer competent replacements for traditional industrial solvents. Whether your company needs a safer semi-aqueous commercial degreaser, a vapor degreaser, a paint stripper or even a new brand of heavy duty hand wipes, eco-friendly solvent companies offer these products and more, complete with thorough research that demonstrates their ability to perform as well or better than traditional cleaning solutions.
Switching to safer cleaning solutions is essential to protecting your workers and keeping your company on track in the midst of the green movement. But it can also offer other benefits, such as reducing your waste disposal fees and lowering your emissions to create emissions credits that are tradable with other companies. Replacing your company's old solvents can be a nervous experience. But with research that demonstrates safer solvents' ability to work as well as traditional solvents, you can make the switch with peace of mind.
In my research on commercial degreasers, I've found that choosing eco friendly industrial solvents is best choice.
