Could You Confuse A Restaurant With Jay-Z's Record Label?
He's got ninety nine problems, and the grill is one. Rap star Jay-Z is currently challenging a trademark ruling over the ownership of the 'Roc-A-Fella' brand in the UK, clashing with a start-up catering service in the process. Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter's claim to the name dates back to 1996, when he co-founded a record label under that name. Located in New York, the formerly independent label is now a subsidiary of the Universal Music Group. Roc A Fella are pretty big in the rap business these days: Kanye West is a featured artist, whilst Jay-Z is still creating new material. And they want to stay big business, even if that means muscling people out of the way.
'Rockafella' on the other hand, is a small catering service going up against chinese wandsworth and other London restaurants, rather than directly challenging Jay-Z on his home turf. The gulf between the two company profiles hasn't always been so cripplingly massive, but it was always pretty big. The owner of Rockafella, Terry Miller, was once a contestant on 'Hell's Kitchen', the continually re-tweaked cooking gameshow that was at the time a two team, elimination show. In 2006, having won the 2005 edition of the show, Miller set up the Rockafella chain of restaurants. Jay Z chose to riff on the infamous John D Rockefellar when naming his hip hop label (with the obvious secondary and colloquial meaning of 'Rock A Fella'). But Miller's Rockafella was named after his speciality dish, the King Prawn Rockafella that helped him win the Hell's Kitchen contest. You won't find it on a Chinese menu, but it's proof of a sort that Jay-Z's claims are utterly over the top.
The idea that a small catering service can besmirch the name of a massive American media empire is frankly comical, and many feel that the hip hop star should pick on someone his own size. But the battle hasn't yet been won: Jay-Z has won the right to appeal against Miller's newly granted trademark. This could go on for many more months. Not least because fighting big US lawyers isn't a cheap past time, even if you once one a quarter of a million pounds. Relaxing in your armchair and order takeaways southampton for this one, because it's going to take a while.
