Candles have lighted the house of mankind for centuries. It has a very interesting history.

Candles may not be that useful in the modern times but they were really very useful in the yester years. We have taken light for granted in the modern world. Now you just have to flip a switch and then light appears. It all looks so easy today. But this was not the case in the middle ages where there was darkness in the night and a candle provided all the light for most of the time. The candles have a very old human association and they have helped the human beings to keep the darkness at bay. Candle making has a distinguished history. One of the earliest inventions of mankind, a candle remains useful even in the modern world today. Candle making has a very interesting and absorbing history. The candle is a simple device and it burns the wax through the wick to produce light.

Candle making has a very old history. In the archaeological excavations, candles have been found in the Egyptian and Cretan sites. These are as old as 5000 years. Before the candles, the Egyptians used a lighting device known as the rush light. It was made of a plant called rush.

Earlier the main ingredient for candle making was Tallow. It was made out of the fat of the sheep and the cattle. These were really not very suitable but at that time there was no suitable replacement. It left a bad odor when a candle burnt. But this was the device which was used to light temples, homes and various other places at that time.

Then Romans made the candle out of beeswax. This was much superior to the candles as there was no odor when it burnt. It was a little expensive though and the common people could not afford that. Then later on, it was colonial American women who extracted wax out of Bayberry. It was much superior to tallow and it produced a nice fragrance. But again it was not popular as it was difficult to produce Bayberry. Later on, Spermaceti, which is a substance and comes out of the body of the whales were used to produce a superior wax for candle making. It was a much superior wax with better quality than both the tallow and the beeswax. It was used for a long time as an ingredient for wax. Candle making requires a lot of effort because it's difficult to handle the wax making process. Candle molding was a difficult process till the time a gentleman called Mr. Morgan produced a candle molding machine.

Later on in the 19th century, it was a material called paraffin which became the most suitable substance for producing wax. It proved to be the best ingredient for producing wax. The reason for its popularity was that it was fast and very economical. Paraffin is now the standard material for wax. It has a low melting point though which can be a cause of concern in the months of summer. Later on Stearic acid solved this problem in candle making process. Now with the invention of modern electricity, candles have really become more or less an ornamental thing. Still candles are used for lighting purpose in many homes. Apart from light the candles have become valuable for various other things like a "candle light dinner".
