Electric Car Within Reach Of Most Drivers

Are you more than ready to stop paying for petroleum products? If you live in California, you’ll have a chance at the Nissan Leaf later this year. The popularity of hybrids, deisel powered cars and other alternatives to gasoline has increased in recent years. Is it finally time for a cost effective all electric car?

There are many reasons to go electric.

The Nissan Leaf produces zero emissions. None. That’s music to the ears of anyone who thinks it’s ludicrous to pollute the air we breathe to the point where we need a smog alert system. The AQMD issue smog alerts, telling the public that the air is unfit to breathe and advising them to limit outdoor exercise. Soccer practices, picnics and recesses are cancelled and people are forced indoors. All because we can't seem to break our habit of using gasoline powered engines. Imagine driving as much as you want without contributing one gram of pollutants to the problem. Imagine now that zero emissions cars are the norm and gasoline is only something from the history books.

Imagine bypassing the gas station - every time you see one. Most hybrid and electric cars, including the new Chevy Volt, can use gasoline when the electric power is depleted. That's not true of the Leaf. This car runs on electricity only. You'll never again buy gasoline. You won't care what the price of gas is. You won't care any more. The downside of an all electric car has been one of the main impediments to widespread acceptance of these vehicles. When the battery dies, you need a recharging station and enough time to recharge. This limits the range that electric cars can travel, which has inhibited their practicality. At last the problem has been addressed sufficiently for most drivers. The Leaf can go 100 miles on a charge. That’s more than enough for most people. The vast majority of drivers travel far less than 100 miles in a day. Most Leaf owners can drive as much as they need to during the day, and then plug it in overnight at home. But electricity is expensive too. How does it compare to paying for gas? Well, at average electricity rates, charging the Nissan Leaf would cost under $3. That’s right – that's less expensive than a gallon of gasoline.

The challenge comes in on long drives. If you were driving from one state to another, you would need to charge your battery along the way. The Leaf's battery can be charged up to 80% capacity in about half an hour at a quick charge station. That’s practical for long trips. The car could be fully charged and ready to go by the time you finish a meal. It even makes sense for restaurants that cater to long-distance travelers to install quick charge stations – if there are enough Nissan Leafs on the road.

The other major obstacle to any alternate fuel vehicles has been price. Research and development makes new technology expensive. In this case, Nissan has priced the Leaf at around $35,000 in the U.S. It's possible than Nissan is pricing it as low as they can in order to get a foothold on the electric car market. The price of the Leaf is higher in Japan. The Leaf's price is $27,500 after a $7,500 tax credit. This is low enough to compete with the Toyota Prius and the Honda CR-V. A home charging station costs about $2,200 installed, and are eligible for a tax credit of 50% of the price.

In spite of the few remaining problems, I think the Nissan Leaf is practical for most drivers.
